Hello there! I am indeed posting on this blog today to let you know of a qualifier event for a tournament in Hong Kong, as well as how Splatoon 1 speedrunning times have almost halved within two months.
Information may be partially inaccurate beyond this point, I don’t really have any good translations for this Splatoon tournament, I’m just using Microsoft Translator. If you’d like to help translate it, please leave a rough translation of important information in the comments, or tag me on the fediverse at @splatoon@wetdry.world, or pop an email over to gamersinternationalhelp+splatoonunofficial@gmail.com.
Thank you to @NorthWestWind@wetdry.world for making me aware of this event.
First of all, let’s talk about the tournament. It looks to be a Splatoon 3 qualifier tournament for Hong Kong that’s taking place at Nintendo Live 2023 Hong Kong on the 15th of October. If you’d like to participate in it, it looks like you must enter by the 4th of October.
Even if you don’t have a team of 4 people, it looks like this tournament allows you to register by yourself, or a group of 2 or 3 people. If you’re interested in entering, enter here.
Just as a quick warning, you’ll need to be rank B or higher in game to enter. Visit the Nintendo website for full details.
Also, if you are entering or watching this tournament in person, you get some free Splatoon stickers (they seem to be similar to the ones I got from My Nintendo a while ago).
Next, let’s talk about speedrunning. I will admit, I’m not really too interested in the speedrunning scene, but I have been playing close attention lately to Splatoon 1 speedruns, particularly after I watched this video from LunaticJ which showed how within one month, Splatoon 1 speedrunners have cut off 20 minutes of the game thanks to a new speedrunning trick.
Before the massive time save that this trick caused, there was only really one notable speedrun trick which was found just a week after the game released on the Wii U. This trick is known as World 4 Skip, and it skips the entirety of World 4 and allows you to skip to World 5 with no issues. This trick saved around 12 minutes.
There has been a few individual level tricks deployed in Splatoon speedruns since then, but none of them are really as major as World 4 Skip.
Until now that is. On August 7 2023, a Japanese player had demonstrated that it was possible to skip World 2 and 3 on an inkrail that connects World 1 and 2. This new skip was known as World 4 Early, and combined with World 4 Skip, this allowed players to play only World 1 and 5. This skip has saved over 20 minutes, and the current record set by LonTr0_ two days ago has broken the 28 minute barrier, which may be one of the last minute barriers to be broken in the game.
Anyways, I’m gonna end off for now. Please take care.
